Scott's horsemanship program helps the horse understand how to interact with the human in a disciplined, willing manner.

Training Style

Appropriate for both English and Western disciplines, our high-quality training and colt starting programs at S Bar J Ranch are suitable for any owner interested in giving or building upon their horse’s foundational horsemanship skills. In addition to the basic horsemanship principles, Scott ensures that the horses he trains do not have foot handling issues, saddling issues, or trailer loading issues.

Foundation Horsemanship

Horses at S Bar J Ranch gain a solid foundation. This means that they will:

  • Operate in a soft, light, and responsive manner

  • Understand their place in the rider / horse relationship

  • Have a clear understanding of how to move each body part independently

Exposure & Confidence Building

To build confidence, all horses will be exposed to a variety of activities. Adequate exposure sets the horse up to more easily succeed in whatever path the owner chooses to take. Horses are exposed to:

  • Riding in open pastures, creek & ditch crossings, and trail riding

  • Working with cattle

  • Roping preparation and flag work

"With every clinic, or horse received for training or private lesson, new friendships are made and existing ones grow deeper."

— Scott Stokes

Training program duration: two months minimum required.

*In the event that weather conditions affect Scott’s ability to ride on a regular basis, Scott will reach out to his clients for full transparency.
